Base colour can vary and can change very rapidly by individuals, but elongated bright blue spots along the side and back, and larger round pale (usually yellowish) spots along lower side are consistent. Large teeth and bulgy eyes are also characteristic. Similar in appearance to tropical coral trouts, but belongs to a different genus and is only found in temperate waters.

这个鱼的底色可以快速变化，变色时侧面和背部的细长亮蓝色斑点和下侧的较大圆形苍白(通常为黄色)斑点是一致的。大牙齿和突出的眼睛也是它们的另外一种特征。外观与热带珊瑚鳟鱼相似，但属于不同的属，只在温带水域中发现。
