The brook trout has a dark green to brown color, with a distinctive marbled pattern (called vermiculation) of lighter shades across the flanks and back and extending at least to the dorsal fin, and often to the tail. A distinctive sprinkling of red dots, surrounded by blue halos, occurs along the flanks. The belly and lower fins are reddish in color, the latter with white leading edges.

美洲红点鲑的颜色为深绿色到棕色，两侧和背部有一种独特的大理石花纹(称为蛭纹)，颜色较浅，至少延伸到背鳍，通常延伸到尾巴。有独特的红点点缀，周围的蓝色光晕，出现在两侧。腹部和下鳍呈淡红色，后鳍前缘为白色。
